As part of the free lunch-hour series "Books Sandwiched In," Howard R. Lamar, Sterling Professor Emeritus of History and former president of Yale, will lead a discussion of Ian Frazier's "On the Rez" on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 12:10-1 p.m. Sponsored by the Friends of the New Haven Free Public Library, the discussion will take place at the United Church on the Green, corner of Temple and Elm streets. Participants are invited to bring a lunch; coffee, tea and cookies will be available for purchase in the basement of the church 11:30 a.m.-12:10 p.m.

The Division of Evolutionary Developmental Biology of the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology elected Günter P. Wagner, professor and chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, as chair elect for 2001. Wagner will serve on the division's executive committee in 2001 and as chair of the division in 2002 and 2003.

Edward Tufte, professor emeritus of political science, statistics and computer science, received an honorary Doctor of Science at Williams College on Sept. 23. Tufte was cited as "preeminent authority on the visual display of data, having taught countless students in academia, business, government and media how to use the lens of design to focus attention on ideas ... Tufte has advanced more than anyone else the craft of data presentation that lies at the heart of all science and mathematics." In addition, Tufte received the Donald Campbell Award for Outstanding Methodological Innovations in Policy Studies on Sept. 1. Given by the Policy Studies Association, the award honored Tufte for his work on displays of statistical evidence in his books "The Visual Display of Quantitative Information," "Envisioning Information" and "Visual Explanations."

The Society of American Foresters selected Tim Gregoire, the J.P. Weyerhaeuser Jr. Professor of Forest Management, to receive its Annual Award in Forest Science. The award recognizes distinguished individual research leading to the advancement of forestry. Gregoire is a leader in the development of research programs in probability sampling as well as the modeling of correlated data, and throughout his career has established widely used procedures for the statistical and forestry research community.

David Austin, assistant professor of chemistry, received the AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals 2000 Excellence in Chemistry Award. The award, now in its 16th year, recognizes the accomplishments and potential of young academics in the United States or Canada in the areas of organic, bioorganic and medicinal chemistry. As part of his award, Austin received a $50,000 unrestricted research grant.

"The Unsteady March: The Rise and Decline of Racial Equality in America" by Rogers M. Smith, the Alfred Cowles Professor of Government Political Science, (with Philip A. Klinkner '92 Ph.D.) received the first annual Horace Mann Bond Book Award from the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University. The award is for "the most outstanding non-fiction work published on the subject of or of concern to African American life, history or thought" during the preceding calendar year.

The forum is open to the public free of charge.
