Panel looks at ethical issues nurses face
The clash between the real and the ideal in the nursing profession will be the topic of a panel discussion being held on Tuesday, March 26.
The panel -- titled "The Nurses Code of Ethics: Can I Keep My Promises in Troubled Times?" -- will take place at 4:30 p.m. in the lecture hall of the Yale School of Nursing (YSN), 100 Church St. South. Light refreshments will be served, and parking is available on the premises.
The event is sponsored by the Center for Health Policy and Ethics at YSN and the Nursing Ethics Special Interest Group at Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH).
Panelists will discuss real-life cases highlighting the conflict nurses often feel between the ideals embodied in the American Nursing Association's (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses and the limitations, frustrations and barriers they encounter in the real world.
One of the featured speakers will be Gladys White, director of the ANA Center for Ethics and Human Rights. White, who has wide experience in ethics and government, was involved in the ANA's recent revision of the nursing code of ethics.
The other panelists will be the Reverend Margaret Lewis, chair of the YNHH Ethics Committee; Leslie Blatt, a clinical nurse specialist and member of the Ethics Committee of the Hospital of St. Raphael; and Elaine Gustafson, assistant professor at YSN, pediatric nurse practitioner and coordinator of the school-based Health Care concentration.
Those planning to attend the panel are invited to bring or send ahead cases they would like to discuss with the panelists. To submit a case, or to reserve a place, contact Doug Olsen by telephone at (203) 737-5431 or by e-mail at douglas.olsen@yale. edu. Reservations can also be made by calling (203) 737-2652.
