Chad Oliver

Silviculturalist Oliver named to Pinchot chair

Chad Oliver, a renowned expert in the field of forest stand dynamics and landscape management, has been appointed the Pinchot Professor of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Oliver is an internationally known silviculturalist who is noted for his understanding of both the dynamics of forest processes and the interactions of human societies and forests. He joined the Yale faculty in January of this year and also serves as director of the University's Global Institute of Sustainable Forestry.

A leading voice for sustainable forestry worldwide, he has broken new ground with the development of computer models that provide important tools for forest land management. His Land Management System (LMS), a computer program which provides forest growth and yield models and analytical and visualization capabilities, has been used widely in forest management.

Oliver's publications include "Forest Stand Dynamics," which has been hailed as one of the most important contributions to silviculture in the last 50 years. He also has authored over 70 reviewed publications including journal articles, book chapters and symposia proceedings. He has a long record of providing testimony to congressional committees, scientific and policy advisory panels, and state boards.

Oliver holds three Yale degrees: He received an M.F.S. from the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies in 1970 and went on to earn M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1972 and 1975, respectively. He held an instructorship briefly at Harvard before joining the faculty at the University of Washington, rising to the rank of full professor there in 1986. His academic and professional experience extends to all the major forested regions of North America, as well as Europe, Asia and Central and South America.

Oliver's appointment at Yale was part of a larger faculty recruitment initiative to further strengthen Yale's ability to serve as a worldwide leader on forestry issues.
