Conference to examine disparities in
health care based on sex, race and income

The racial, socioeconomic and gender-based disparities in health care will be addressed during a Yale conference titled "Yale and NIH: A Partnership to Reduce Health Disparities," on Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Harkness Auditorium, 333 Cedar St.

The event, which begins at 10 a.m., is free and open to the public.

Keynote speaker Ruth Kirchstein, acting director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will host a question-and-answer session on the health disparities initiatives at the NIH. Moderated by Catherine Lynch Gilliss, dean of the School of Nursing, the conference is one of the many activities marking Yale's Tercentennial celebration.

President Richard C. Levin will also be on hand to announce a new NIH-funded center at the School of Nursing called the Center for Self-Management Interventions for Populations at Risk. The new center will create self-management interventions for people at high risk for developing health problems through risky behaviors, vulnerability, or the presence of disease or disability.

The health disparities conference is a partnership among the NIH, the School of Nursing and the School of Medicine and its Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH). "This is the first time that a transdisciplinary effort by all three schools will address this important issue," says Gilliss. "It brings up some important variables in understanding differences in the kinds of treatments we prescribe."

Patricia Grady, director of the National Institute of Nursing Research, will deliver opening remarks. The day-long conference will feature three panels: "The Role of Policy in Health Disparities," "The Role of Behavior in Health Disparities" and "The Role of Genetics in Health Disparities."

The Yale faculty members participating in the conference will include Dr. James Comer, Susan Lederer, Dr. Harlan M. Krumholz, Martha Radford, Dr. John Levanthal, Gail Melkus, Ann Williams, Ezra Griffith, Kenneth K. Kidd, Jeannie Pasacreta and Dr. Mark R. Cullen.
