Lecture series offers inside perspective
on 'Managing the European Union'

Individuals who have played a prominent role in the development of the European Union in recent years will be featured in a new lecture series being launched this week.

"Managing the European Union: A View from the Inside" is sponsored by the Council for European Studies and the Program on European Union Studies, part of the Yale Center for International and Area Studies.

The series will look at the European political practices from the perspective of those who are or have been in charge of European affairs in three main institutions: the Council, the Commission and the Parliament. The talks will illustrate some of the current debates that have, and will continue, to influence the future of Europe.

The talks are free and open to the public. The topics and featured speakers will be:

Tuesday, Feb. 25 --"Economic and Monetary Union: The Role of the European Commission," by Yves-Thibault de Silguy, senior executive vice president of Suez, a leader in water-related and waste services, and a former member of the European Commission responsible for economic and monetary affairs. The talk will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St.

Thursday, April 3 -- "National Governments, the Council of Ministers and the European Council," by Elisabeth Guigou, member of the National Assembly of France, former minister of justice, minister of social affairs and minister of European affairs. This talk will be held at 4 p.m. in the Luce Hall auditorium, 34 Hillhouse Ave.

Tuesday, May 6 -- "The Role of the European Parliament in EMU," by Christa Randzio-Plath, a member of the European Parliament and chair of its Economic and Financial Committee. This talk will be at 4 p.m. in Luce Hall auditorium, 34 Hillhouse Ave.
