Mary E. Miller

Miller reappointed as Saybrook College master

Mary E. Miller, the Vincent Scully Professor of the History of Art, has been reappointed as master of Saybrook College by President Richard C. Levin.

Miller, an authority on the art of Mesoamerica, is a graduate of Yale (M.A. 1978, M.Phil. 1980 and Ph.D. 1981) who has served on the faculty since 1980. She will begin her second five-year term on July 1.

Levin noted that the committee of Saybrook fellows and students charged with reviewing Miller's years as master of the residential college commended her "straightforward, supportive and generous nature in her interaction with those within the college.

"Students and fellows have praised her professionalism and strong advocacy on behalf of activities enhancing residential college life and comment on her flexibility and creativity in working to achieve a better Saybrook College, a community about which she cares deeply," added Levin. "As master, professor and family member, she serves as a role model for many."

Levin said that the review committee also reported "great appreciation and pleasure" at the "devotion" of Miller's family: Associate Master Edward Kamens, professor and director of graduate studies in East Asian Languages and Literatures (Japanese), and their children, Bill and Alice.

The President expressed his appreciation to the review committee, which was chaired by Stephen Stearns, the Edward P. Bass Professor and chair of Evolutionary Biology and professor at the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

He concluded: "I know that all members of the Saybrook community join with them and me in congratulating Master Miller and hoping that this second term of her mastership will be as happy and successful for her and the Saybrook community as the last has been."
