Ambassador Liu Biwei (left) told President Richard C. Levin that Yale can take pride in the fact that it has had an educational partnership with China for over 150 years.

Ambassador Liu Biwei, the Chinese counsel general in New York, visited Yale on Feb. 24 for a series of meetings focused on Yale's efforts in China.

In meetings with President Richard C. Levin, Vice President Linda Lorimer, Yale faculty, and Chinese students and scholars, Liu praised Yale's efforts in China, remarking on Yale's prestigious reputation there.

"Yale is the first choice of many Chinese students and scholars that wish to study overseas," Liu said. "To study at Yale is a dream come true for many young Chinese, indeed, if I was 20 years younger it would be my dream to study at Yale as well."

Liu discussed the importance of international collaborations in helping China develop tools for overcoming some of the challenges it faces and for ensuring economic growth.

"We face inequities in the divide between coastal and inland areas; urban and rural areas; and the east and the west," he said. "We can learn from foreign universities how to make advances in science and technology to assist in efficient economic development."

Liu said it was of "profound significance" for Yale's image in China that the University educated the first Chinese student to graduate from an American university -- Yung Wing, who earned a B.A. from Yale College in 1854.

"Yale can take pride in the fact that compared to your counterparts, your cooperation and interaction with China dates back over 150 years," said Liu.
