Six undergraduates earn prizes
for their private collections of books

The winners of the Adrian Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prizes in the 2004 competition have been announced.

The prizes were established in 1957 by the late Adrian Van Sinderen '10 B.A., in order to encourage undergraduates to collect books, to build up their own libraries, and to read for both pleasure and education.

The Senior prize of $750 was awarded to Valerie Idehen of Saybrook College for her African-American literature collection. The Senior Runner-Up prize of $600 was awarded to David Gorin of Trumbull College for his collection of books by contemporary American poets. Senior Honorable Mention prizes of $500 were awarded to Samantha Culp of Timothy Dwight College for her collection on 20th-century arts and culture, both East and West, and to Joshua Foer of Trumbull College for his "Library of Wonders."

Sophomore Honorable Mention prizes of $250 were awarded to Julian Darwall of Silliman College for his collection on hoboes, itinerant workers who had a distinct subculture from 1870 to 1940, and to Matthew McCarty of Ezra Stiles College for his collection on classical art and archaeology.

Prizes will be awarded by the committee of judges at a luncheon for the winners to be held on Thursday, April 1.

Judges for this year's competition were Stephen Parks (chair), Sylvia V.S. Abbate, Elisabeth Fairman, James Prosek, William Reese and David Haltom '04.
