Richard O. Prum

Prum is designated the Coe Professor

Richard O. Prum, newly named as the William Robertson Coe Professor of Ornithology, is an evolutionary ornithologist with broad interests in phylogenetics, feathers, structural color, evolution and development, behavior, sexual selection and historical biogeography.

Prum came to Yale's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in January, and is also the William Robertson Coe Curator of Ornithology and head curator of Vertebrate Zoology at the Peabody Museum of Natural History.

His recent research has focused on theoretical and molecular studies of the development and evolution of feathers, developing and applying new tools for the study of the physics and evolution of structural coloration, and continued efforts in phylogenetic ethology of polygynous birds. He has worked throughout Central and South America and in Madagascar, and most recently studied fossil theropods from China. The author of numerous articles and book chapters, he has given over 40 scientific presentations on his work throughout the world.

Prum holds an A.B. in biology cum laude from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in biological sciences from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He was Chapman Fellow in the Department of Ornithology at the American Museum of Natural History 1989-1991, and served in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas 1991-2003, rising from assistant professor to full professor. There, he also served as curator of ornithology at the University's Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center.

A Fulbright Scholar in 2001-2002, Prum has received six grants from the National Science Foundation in the past 10 years. He has also received grants from the National Geographic Society, the American Museum of Natural History and the Institute for Museum and Library Services, among others.

Prum's professional memberships include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Ornithologists' Union (where he served as a member of its council 2000-2003), the American Society of Naturalists, the Animal Behavior Society and the International Ornithological Congress, among others.

He is a member of the editorial board of Molecular and Development Evolution and was associate editor of The Auk, the Journal of the American Ornithologist's Union 1999-2003.
