Unite for Sight to offer
screenings at city library

The Yale chapter of Unite for Sight, a non-profit organization that addresses eye and health care issues, will be among the hosts of a national event on Saturday, April 3, aimed at detecting undiagnosed vision problems in children and their families.

More than 5,000 children and their family members will participate in Unite for Sight Health Festival Day in cities nationwide, including New Haven, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, Chicago and Washington, D.C.

U.S. Representative Rosa De Lauro (D-CT) is expected to participate in Unite for Sight's event in New Haven, which will take place 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the New Haven Free Public Library, 133 Elm St.

Unite for Sight Health Festival Day will prevent blindness among children through free preliminary vision screenings for children and their parents, a health insurance drive to enroll the uninsured in free health coverage programs, and vision education programs. Activities include the exploration of optical illusions and the construction of an eye model using various arts-and-crafts materials.

The goal of Unite for Sight Health Festival Day is to improve school readiness by detecting undiagnosed vision problems, including amblyopia. The National Eye Institute estimates that more than 500,000 children in the United States become blind in one eye primarily because they never had a vision screening to diagnose and treat amblyopia.

Unite for Sight is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization with 50 chapters established at universities and medical schools throughout the country. It was founded by Yale alumnus Jennifer Staple '03 when she was a sophomore at the University. Since its founding, some 1,000 student volunteers have become part of an international network working to build healthier communities through disease prevention, eye health promotion and health education. The Yale chapter is a Dwight Hall at Yale member organization.

For more information about the event, contact Staple at JStaple@uniteforsight.org or visit the group's website at www.uniteforsight.org.
