The Yale Alumni Magazine cover combined art by Garry Trudeau and a photo by Michael Marsland.

The Yale Alumni Magazine raised $2,400 for the literacy group New Haven Reads by offering a limited edition of prints of its February 2003 cover featuring an illustration by Doonesbury cartoonist Garry B. Trudeau, an alumnus of both Yale College (B.A. 1970) and the School of Art (M.F.A. 1973).

The illustration, which Trudeau titled "The Return," merged a photograph of Yale's Old Campus taken by University photographer Michael Marsland (whose images often grace this newspaper's pages) with a drawing of a middle-aged Mike Doonesbury, the comic strip's protagonist, surveying the scene of his college days.

When the poster was first advertised in the magazine's November/December 2003 issue, the 200 signed and framed images sold out within two weeks. An additional 100 unframed, unsigned posters also sold out quickly.

"Garry Trudeau is the great chronicler of latter-day Yale, and the Yale alumni know it. There was an incredible demand for this print," says Kathrin Day Lassila, editor of the Yale Alumni Magazine. "Trudeau very generously donated his art twice: once for the magazine's cover and then a second time as a fundraiser for New Haven Reads. We're extremely grateful."

The Yale Alumni magazine (www.yalealumnimagazine.com) is a bi-monthly magazine that reports on the University for its alumni. It is published by Yale Alumni Publications Inc., a non-profit corporation independent of the University. The magazine is supported principally by Yale College class dues, group and individual subscriptions, and advertising.

New Haven Reads (www.cityofnewhaven.com/library/nhreads/index.html) is a city initiative to galvanize a coalition of local agencies and literacy organizations dedicated to raising public awareness about the power of reading. Its efforts include a community book bank at 20 Lincoln Way that collects and distributes books for free.
