Polish government honors Yale curator's work
Vincent Giroud, curator of modern books and manuscripts at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, received the Order of Merit in Polish Culture, the highest official honor in the arts given by the Polish government.
Waldemar Dabrowski, Polish minister of culture, presented the award on March 19 in Warsaw, where Giroud was attending a conference celebrating the centenary of the Polish playwright, novelist and essayist Witold Gombrowicz (190469). Giroud spoke at the meeting about the Yale Gombrowicz collection.
The Order of Merit recognizes Giroud's service in the international dissemination of Polish culture. At Yale, Giroud has built the Beinecke Library's archival collections in Polish literature, which now include the papers of Nobel Prize winner Czeslaw Milosz, among others.
Giroud also helped establish the Witold Gombrowicz Archival Internship at Yale, and is organizing a major exhibit and international conference marking the author's centenary, to be held at the Beinecke Library next fall.
