United Way honors Yale for its campaign

The United Way of Greater New Haven honored Yale with the Campaign of the Year Award on March 26 at a community recognition event.

Judith Dozier Hackman, associate dean of Yale College and director of Graduate Teaching Fellows, coordinated this year's campaign. Her success was acknowledged with the Coordinator of the Year Award.

University Vice President for Finance and Administration John E. Pepper accepted the Yale award from Barbara Pearce, chair of the 20032004 Campaign for New Haven.

"We at Yale are very pleased to be a part of the Greater New Haven United Way," said Pepper. "We look forward to next year."

The United Way Campaign at Yale set a goal of $500,000 and raised over $562,000 -- breaking the University's previous record. Last year, Yale employees donated a total of $448,527. Many of these gifts were at the Leadership level of $1,000 or more, but the total amount represents a very broad range of employees and levels of giving.

Hackman will serve as chair of the 20042005 Campaign. She is a member of the Greater New Haven United Way Campaign Cabinet and has been elected to a three-year membership on the Greater New Haven United Way board.

"I have truly enjoyed my first year as chair of the Yale United Way Fund," Hackman said. "Working with the Yale UW Co-Chairs and Champions, Yale giving has increased by 25%. These gifts help support nearly 40 United Way partner agencies and numerous other programs and projects identified by Yale donors and United Way community volunteers. For 2004-2005, we look forward to expanding staff participation from throughout the University, with the help of a broadly representative advisory board soon to be appointed."

Questions and suggestions about the United Way Campaign at Yale may be directed to judith.hackman@yale.edu.

In addition to Hackman, Yale United Way leadership came from Irwin Birnbaum, chief operating officer at the School of Medicine, co-chair; Laura Freebairn-Smith, director of the Organizational Development and Learning Center, past chair; Richard Brodhead, dean of Yale College, University Leadership chair; and David Newton, associate vice president and director of University Properties, New Haven Leadership chair.

As a follow-up to the fund-raising campaign, the University will hold a student-led Yale Community Service Day in collaboration with the United Way on April 24, giving students, faculty and staff the opportunity to contribute their services to organizations and programs including United Way agencies throughout Greater New Haven.
