Two-day symposium at the School of Nursing will celebrate the contributions of midwives
Yale School of Nursing (YSN) will host a symposium titled "Celebrating the Contributions of Academic Midwifery" Thursday-Friday, April 29-30.
The event will also mark the retirement of YSN Professor Helen Varney Burst after 41 years of teaching and practicing midwifery. (See related story.)
The symposium will feature presentations by some of the world's most influential leaders in the field of midwifery. It is open to the public.
The symposium will begin at 4 p.m. on April 29 with Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds, "Current Evidence on Reducing Genital Tract Trauma at Birth," at the Anlyan Center for Medical Research, 300 Cedar St.
On April 30, the program will continue at Harkness Auditorium, 333 Cedar St., with welcoming remarks by President Richard Levin and YSN Dean Catherine Gilliss.
YSN recognized the contributions of the practice of midwifery in 1956, when it became one of the first graduate schools in the nation to prepare nurse-midwives. Today, it is the second oldest existing master's program.
Since the program's inception, YSN has trained nearly 500 nurse midwives, many in leadership positions. Yale midwives have founded midwifery education programs in other academic institutions throughout the United States, developed new models of care that have shaped the profession, directed midwifery services, and held leadership positions in the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
There is no charge to attend Grand Rounds. To register, or for information about the fee for the symposium, contact Yale Conference Services at (203) 432-0465, or email confserv@yale.edu. The fee is waived for students.
