Episcopal Church at Yale launches new initiatives with recent gift
The Episcopal Church at Yale (ECY) recently received a gift of $110,000 to establish the Boone Porter Christian Initiatives at Yale.
The endowment fund, named in honor of Reverend Canon H. Boone Porter (1923-1999), was established by the Porter family and Max Belding, a close friend of the late Yale alumnus.
The Porter Initiatives seek to encourage and provide support for the development of -- and experimentation with -- new and innovative programs for ministry aimed at students.
This year, two new programs are being inaugurated with support from the endowment: the Episcopal Chapel Singers and a Science and Religion Dialogue Group.
The Episcopal Chapel Singers is a University-wide group that will specialize in classical and modern sacred music, including chant and gospel. It will be open to students of all denominations and faiths, and will be led by Glen Segger, organist and music director, with help from Robbie Schrum '05. The group, which will perform regularly at ECY's Sunday services, will also recruit singers from New Haven high schools, who will serve as choral scholars.
The Science and Religion Dialogue Group will meet biweekly; its members will read and discuss seminal works in the neurosciences, molecular genetics and ecology, looking at their impact on questions of theology, ethics and belief. The group will be open to the public. This initiative reflects the long-held beliefs of the Reverend Nihal de Lanerolle, ECY's chaplain-in-residence and associate professor in the neurosurgery and neurobiology departments at Yale, that the dialogue between science and religion inform and clarify the assumptions of both endeavors.
ECY will mark the inauguration of the Boone Porter Christian Initiatives on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 3:30 p.m. in Dwight Chapel, 67 High St. A Service of Thanksgiving for the life and ministry of the late Reverend Canon H. Boone Porter will follow at 5 p.m. The events are free and open to the public.
The Reverend Canon H. Boone Porter held degrees from Yale College (1945) and the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. He was professor of history at Nashotah Seminary and professor of liturgics at General Seminary, New York. Active in civil rights and Indian missions, Porter was a member of the Standing Liturgical Commission, the author of several books and articles, and long-time editor of the Living Church.
Established 134 years ago, the Episcopal Church at Yale is one of the oldest university chaplaincies in the country.
