"Sheet of Studies" by Baccio Bandinelli (1488-1560) will be one of the subjects of the first master class in drawing led by John Manciari.

Fall workshop series will focus on gallery's collections and treasures

Various aspects of art history and art making will be addressed in four new lecture/workshop series being launched this fall by the Yale University Art Gallery.

Curators and scholars will examine Italian master drawings and French and British romantic painting, and a practicing artist will lead drawing sessions in the American galleries. "Art Club!" -- the fourth new venture -- is a collaboration with the Yale Center for British Art aimed at youngsters ages 9 to 12.

"The lack of space for special exhibitions during the restoration of the Louis I. Kahn building has made us rethink our programming," says Anna Hammond, deputy director of the gallery. "This is a great opportunity to focus on the museum's rich permanent collection and concentrate on areas of our holdings that students and the public may not be aware of, such as the master drawings."

Undergraduates with a valid I.D. may attend the first three series for free; there is a fee for others. Information about the series follows:

"A Master Class in Master Drawings," Thursdays, Oct. 2, 16 and 30, at 5:30 p.m. Led by John Marciari, the Florence B. Selden Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Yale Art Gallery's Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs, the series will explore the following topics: "The Renaissance and the Rise of Drawings," "The Great Age of Italian Drawings" and "Collecting and Connoisseurship: Old Master Drawings Today." Call Elizabeth Harnett at (203) 432-0620 to register.

"Art Across the Channel: French and British Painting in the Romantic Era," Thursdays, Nov. 6, 13 and 20, at 5:30 p.m. This series will explore affinities in themes and techniques through the close analysis of paintings, prints, drawings and photographs from the collections at the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. It will be led by Timothy Barringer, assistant professor in the history of art; Susan Greenberg, the Horace W. Goldsmith Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art; and Russell Lord, curatorial assistant in the Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs. Call Elizabeth Harnett at (203) 432-0620 to register.

"Observing and Drawing in the American Galleries," Wednesdays, Nov. 5, 12 and 19 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Artist Jaime Ursic MFA '02, a member of the Yale Art Gallery's education staff, will lead three drawing sessions in the American galleries and talk about the art historical context of the works of such artists as Edward Hopper and Alexander Calder. No previous drawing experience is necessary. Call (203) 436 -1599 to register.

"Art Club!," Saturday, Oct. 4 or 11, 18 or 25, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants ages 9-12 will engage in interactive gallery activities followed by hands-on art making at the Yale Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art. Each child may register for one date at each museum. There is a $5 materials fee per session; free for members of the Yale art museums. Enrollment is limited. To register for one or more sessions call (203) 432-2858.
