Symposium honors the contributions of late sociologist Roger Gould
The Department of Sociology will host a day-long conference on Saturday,
Gould spent his last two years as professor of sociology at Yale. Prior to that he served on the faculty at the University of Chicago, where he was editor of the American Journal of Sociology. He was known for his methodologically sophisticated historical and comparative investigations of violent conflict.
Two weeks before he died, Gould completed his monograph "The Collision of Wills: How Ambiguity about Social Rank Breeds Conflict," which has recently been published by the University of Chicago Press. This work will serve as the principal focal point for the memorial conference, which will feature presentations by Andrew Abbott of the University of Chicago, Peter Bearman and Charles Tilly of Columbia University, Ronald Breiger of the University of Arizona, Bonnie Erickson of the University of Toronto, Calvin Morrill of the University of California at Irvine and Joel Podolny of Harvard University.
The conference will be held 9 a.m.-5:15 p.m. at the Graduate Club, 155 Elm St. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served to all those who attend. There will also be a wine and cheese reception. While there is no admission charge, those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to Ann Fitzpatrick at (203) 432-3320.
