The dedication of the new Walter Camp stamp on Sept. 27 coincides with Employee Day at the Bowl.

Camp stamp to be dedicated at Cornell game

The formal dedication of a new stamp honoring legendary Yale football coach Walter Camp will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Yale Bowl, located on Derby Avenue.

The Camp stamp is one of four 37-cent stamps honoring "Early Football Heroes," which were issued in August by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). It honors the Yale alumnus and New Haven native who became known as "the father of American football" for his role in codifying the rules of the game while coaching for the University. The other famous football figures commemorated in the series are Bronko Nagurski, Ernie Nevers and Red Grange.

The dedication ceremony will take place at noon at the Walter Camp Foundation hospitality tent, located outside Gate D.

Jack Ford, co-host of the CBS talk show "Living It Up! With Ali and Jack," will serve as master of ceremonies for the program, which is free and open to the public. The featured speakers at the event will be Bruce Alexander, vice president and director of Yale's Office of New Haven and State Affairs; Thomas Beckett, director of Yale Athletics; William Raffone, president of the Walter Camp Foundation; Barbara Reilly, head of Hopkins School, which Camp attended; and John F. Walsh, vice chair of the board of governors of the USPS. The ceremony will also include the presentation of colors by the New Haven Emerald Society. Refreshments will be served, and the stamps will be available for purchase.

The program is sponsored by the USPS, Yale, the Walter Camp Foundation and Hopkins School.

Employee Day at the Bowl

The stamp dedication ceremony coincides with Employee Day at the Bowl, when University staff and their families can enjoy free general admission seating to watch the Bulldogs take on the Cornell Big Red at 1 p.m.

Prior to the game, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Yale employees and their guests can enjoy a free picnic lunch of hot dogs, soda and cookies provided by Yale Dining Services in the Employee Food Tent located in the Hospitality Village across from Gate E. Prizes will be raffled off at half-time.

All Yale employees and their immediate families and all Yale retirees and one guest can get free admission to this and all other Bulldog home games by showing their University I.D. at Gates E or A at the Yale Bowl. There is also free parking at Lot D on Central Avenue.
