Curator of Education Linda Friedlaender is shown here with the 2002-2003 group of student guides. Student guides are chosen for their enthusiasm and curiosity.

Museum expands its Student Guide Program

Among the new activities being offered as part of Parents' Weekend Oct. 10-12 are student-guided tours at the Yale Center for British Art.

The museum's Yale Student Guide Program was started in the fall of 2002 under the guidance of Linda Friedlaender, curator of education, with the goal of increasing the use of the center by undergraduates.

The inaugural group of guides -- chosen for their enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity -- represented varying fields of study, from pre-law to history.

The students met weekly and were introduced to the permanent collection by the British Art Center's staff and Yale faculty. The guides were also trained in visual analysis and the mechanics of presenting a tour. Before giving public tours, each guide first presented a thematic tour based on objects in the permanent collection in early spring for the rest of the group and Friedlaender.

The student guides became "a very close-knit group," says Friedlaender. Working closely with other student groups and academic departments, they organized social activities and special programs for Yale College, and even arranged special lectures by Yale art historian Professor Vincent Scully and contemporary artist Kara Walker.

Due to the success of last year's guides, Friedlaender is expanding the program. This year, the guides will give tours not only on Saturdays, but also during the center's Wednesday late-night evening hours and for special campus events.

In conjunction with Parents' Weekend, the guides will present tours at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, and at noon on Sunday, Oct. 12.

Students interested in learning how to become a guide can contact Friedlaender at (203) 432-2855 or linda.friendlaender@yale.edu. For a schedule of student-guided tours, visit the British Art Center website at www.yale.edu/ycba.
