Memorial Service For Patricia Goldman-Rakic
There will be a memorial service on Sunday, Oct. 19, for Patricia S. Goldman-Rakic, professor of neuroscience, neurology, psychiatry and psychology at the School of Medicine, who died on July 31 at age 66.
The service will take place at 4 p.m. in Battell Chapel, corner of College and Elm streets. A reception will follow.
Professor Rakic was a world-renowned neuroscientist, whose research paved the way for scientists to understand the neurological basis of normal behavior and of diseases such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder. She was the first to discover and describe the order and structure of the brain's frontal lobe, which is responsible for higher cognitive functions.
Professor Rakic received numerous awards for her research, and on Oct. 17, the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) will inaugurate the Patricia S. Goldman-Rakic Memorial Award for Creative Discoveries in Neuroscience.
Memorial contributions in her memory may be sent to NARSAD, 60 Cutter Mill Rd., Suite 404, Great Neck, NY 11021.
