President Richard Levin has announced that Paul A. Fleury has agreed to extend his appointment as dean of the Faculty of Engineering through June 30, 2007.
Fleury, who was named dean in 2000, is the Frederick W. Beinecke Professor of Engineering and Applied Physics and professor of physics.
In a letter to the Faculty of Engineering, Levin noted that those with whom he consulted "praised Dean Fleury's openness, fairness and sensitivity," adding that he was "gratified to find my own admiration for the Dean's work echoed enthusiastically."
During his first five years as dean, Fleury led a University-wide effort to establish a Department of Biomedical Engineering and was involved in the planning and design of a new Engineering Research Building that will be ready for occupancy in October 2005. Nineteen noted faculty were recruited and the undergraduate chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering programs were re-accredited for the maximum six-year periods. In addition, there has been a strong reconnection with engineering alumni.
"Over the next two and a half years," says Fleury, "I expect that we will solidify the outstanding foundation and expand the collaborations we have already built with the Yale School of Medicine, so that our biomedical engineering department is recognized as one of the nation's top programs. I want the external visibility of Yale Engineering to match our accomplishments -- the perception to catch up with the performance -- so that Yale Engineering is the program of choice for students seeking a truly modern liberal education."
Fleury notes two other areas of anticipated growth are the environmental program reaching critical mass in faculty and facilities, and substantial progress in the second phase of building the "Engineering Campus."
Fleury earned his doctorate in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and had a distinguished career in industry, government advisory positions and academia. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Fleury holds five patents and has authored more than 130 scientific publications.
