New developments in general equilibrium modeling are explored in this book, co-edited by T. N. Srinivasan and published in honor of economist Herbert Scarf.

Yale Books in Brief

The following is a list of books recently or soon-to-be published by members of the Yale community. Descriptions are based on material provided by the publishers.

Oboe Unbound: Contemporary Techniques
Libby Van Cleve, associate director of oral history, American music
(Scarecrow Press Inc.)

This book is a resource for oboists and composers designed to open up the tradition-bound assumptions of the oboe's capabilities. Libby Van Cleve, who has given extensive solo and ensemble oboe performances throughout North America, includes descriptions of the instrument's standard technique (such as range, reeds and use of vibrato) and a basic fingering chart, but also provides a discussion of the many techniques that have recently been utilized (such as multiphonics, altered timbres, extended range and others). The book includes information about the use of electronics for amplification, recording and sound enhancement as well as a substantial bibliography of music and literature, a discography including jazz, non-western and art music recordings, and a CD of contemporary oboe sounds and two previously unreleased compositions for the instrument.

Preaching in the New Millennium: Celebrating the Tercentennial of Yale University
Edited by the Reverend Frederick J. Streets, University chaplain and senior pastor of the Church of Christ in Yale
(Yale University Press)

In this collection of sermons, 15 religious leaders reflect upon the moral, social and political nature of contemporary life. The sermons originated during the Tercentennial celebrations at Yale and provide a snapshot of the religious history of the University and its contribution to the character of the American nation.

Among the religious figures whose sermons are featured are William Willimon, William Sloane Coffin, Peter Gomes, Gardner Taylor and Barbara Brown Taylor. Their sermons offer religious and intellectual insights into the national consciousness both before and after the tragedies of Sept. 11, 2001. In his introduction, the Reverend Frederick J. Streets sets the collection in context and contemplates the past and present nature of religious life at Yale.

Frontiers in Applied General Equilibrium Modeling
Edited by T. N. Srinivasan, the Samuel C. Park Jr. Professor of Economics and chair of South Asian Studies at the Yale Center for International and Area Studies; Timothy J. Kehoe; and John Whalley
(Cambridge University Press)

This volume brings together 12 papers by many of the leading applied general equilibrium modelers, honoring Herbert E. Scarf, the "father of equilibrium computation in economics," Sterling Professor of Economics and professor at the School of Management. The contributors discuss traditional subjects in the field as well as new developments, covering such topics as non-convexities in economy-wide models, tax policy, developmental modeling and energy modeling. The book also covers a range of new approaches, conceptual issues and computational algorithms, such as calibration, and new areas of applications such as macroeconomics of real business cycles and finance. An introductory chapter written by the editors maps out issues and scenarios for the future evolution of applied general equilibrium.

A Photographic History of Killingworth
Dr. Thomas L. Lentz, professor and vice chair of cell biology and associate dean of admissions, School of Medicine
(Essex Printing)

Dr. Thomas L. Lentz, a resident of the town of Killingworth, Connecticut, for some 40 years, offers a history of the town in this 130-page book, which features over 200 historical photographs. Many of these were painstakingly restored for the book. "A Photographic History of Killingworth" includes a history of Colonial Killingworth; photos and documentation of early houses, schools, churches and the town hall; and a history of the town's people, organizations, occupations, pastimes and infrastructure. The chapter on schools includes class pictures starting with 1884 through the elementary school class of 1973. Also featured in the book are descriptions of where the early Indians made camp, and of old roads and houses that have vanished over time. Many of the early photographs are from an album donated to the Killingworth Historical Society, of which Lentz is a founding member. The author is also a longtime member of the town's Planning and Zoning Commission.

Baby and Child Heroes in Ancient Greece
Corrine Ondine Pache, assistant professor of classics
(University of Illinois Press)

Corrine Pache's "Baby and Child Heroes in Ancient Greece" is the first systematic study of the Greek babies and children who became enduring myths, objects of worship and the recipients of sacrifice. Pache examines literary, pictorial and numismatic representations to explore such child heroes as Charila, Opheltes, Melikertes, and the children of Hercules and Medea. She argues that the stories, songs and sanctuaries honoring these heroes express parental fears and guilt about children's death. She further demonstrates that while the myths and rituals articulate basic human anxieties, their emphasis is on the beauty that transcends the gruesomeness of the narrative, turning their dread into poetry.
