Group helps unify tsunami relief efforts
Since the devastating tsunami of Dec. 26, many students have been meeting on a weekly basis with Betty Trachtenberg, dean of student affairs, to discuss and unify Yale College's efforts towards tsunami relief.
These efforts have led to the creation of the Yale College Tsunami Relief Fund and the student-run organization Tsunami Relief at Yale College (TRYC).
TRYC serves as an umbrella organization for Yale groups and students who wish to raise funds for areas affected by the tsunami. By doing so, it aims to prevent the duplication and conflict of fundraising events towards the same cause. Additionally, TRYC coordinates the Yale College Tsunami Relief Fund.
The fund, launched on Feb. 1, pools resources raised on campus, and channels these resources to specific organizations in three countries hit by the tsunami: India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. TRYC will work to build long-term relationships with these organizations so that relief will be provided not just this year, but to support long-term rehabilitation efforts.
TRYC will be working with this year's International Cultural Festival to raise funds for tsunami relief. It will also hold several campus events to raise funds and increase awareness of the situation in South and Southeast Asia.
TRYC's membership is open to the entire Yale community. Any organization that wishes to join the coalition, and any interested individuals are welcome. For more information, send e-mail to michelle.desaram@yale.edu or carol.yu@yale.edu.
