At the Sept. 9 dedication, James Bradley (center), who works in custodial services at the School of Medicine, cut the ribbon to his new home, flanked by his wife, Margo (left), and his mother, Janie (right), a former Yale employee. The University donated the property to a local church, which renovated the building. Bradley later purchased the house through Yale's Homebuyer Program.

Yale employee's new home is the result of an unusual town-gown partnership

A newly renovated two-family home in New Haven at 65 Bristol St. was dedicated on Sept. 9, capping an unusual cooperation between Yale and the not-for-profit development corporation of a local church.

Located on the corner of Bristol and Ashmun streets, the two-family house stands near a new Yale police facility and community center, currently under construction.

As part of the University's commitment to revitalizing the Dixwell Avenue neighborhood, Yale bought two adjacent parcels on Bristol Street that had become eyesores. The University kept one property and donated the other to the Beulah Heights Pentacostal Church's development corporation, which works to improve the neighborhood, make it safer and provide affordable housing.

The Beulah Land Development Corporation renovated the house, putting in new floors, siding, roofing and more. Yale's Office of New Haven and State Affairs, directed by Vice President Bruce Alexander, worked with the Development Corporation to market the house.

The buyer was James Bradley, who works as a custodian at the School of Medicine. He purchased the house -- his first -- through the Yale Homebuyer Program. Bradley joins 632 other Yale employees who have benefited from the program. Yale's commitment of $14 million to the successful venture has yielded over $84 million in home purchases by Yale employees.

Speakers at the dedication included Alexander; Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, chief executive officer of the Beulah Land Development Corporation and spiritual leader of the church; and representatives of city government.
