Yale, United Way of Greater New Haven and New Haven Reads are again teaming up to help "build a city of readers" by encouraging Yale students, staff and faculty to donate new or gently used books for young people.
Yale students will kick off the "Day of Caring" on Saturday, Sept. 11, as 15 Greater New Haven towns also commemorate the 9/11 attacks with hundreds of "Day of Caring" projects and drives. The student-run event, which will take place on Cross Campus, will feature a series of bands throughout the day.
Members of the Yale community can drop off their books Sept. 13-17 in special boxes at the following campus locations: all Yale libraries, all residential colleges, the McDougal Center in the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St.; and the Yale University Health Center, 17 Hillhouse Ave. The donated books will be distributed free of charge to young people throughout Greater New Haven.
The "Day of Caring" Book Drive is being led this year by Diane Turner, associate University librarian. "We truly believe all children deserve books of their own," says Turner, "and we're committed, as our posters say, to 'Building a City of Readers.'" Anyone interested in assisting with the book drive can contact Turner at (203) 432-1810.
