Memorial Service for John Rodgers

The Department of Geology & Geophysics will hold a memorial service on Thursday, Sept. 9, to commemorate the life of John Rodgers, the Silliman Professor Emeritus of Geology.

The service will take place at 2 p.m. in Battell Chapel, corner of College and Elm streets. A reception will follow at Branford College, 74 High St.

Professor Rodgers, who died on March 7 at the age of 89, devoted his research to understanding the origins and histories of mountains through the folded and faulted layers of sedimentary rock that make up much of their fabric. He was known among his students and colleagues and "Mr. Appalachian Mountain Man" for his fieldwork on that range. He was author of "The Tectonics of the Appalachians" and "Bedrock Geologic Map of the State of Connecticut" and co-author (with Carl Dunbar) of the textbook "Principles of Stratigraphy."
