for work on schizophrenia
Two Yale psychiatrists will receive the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) APIRE/Kempf Fund Award for Research Development in Psychobiological Psychiatry at the association's annual meeting May 5 in Atlanta.
Dr. John Krystal, the Robert L. McNeil Jr. Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and deputy chair for research in the Department of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine, and Dr. Daniel Mathalon, assistant professor of psychiatry, will be recognized for providing new insights into the neurobiology and treatment of cognitive impairments associated with schizophrenia.
Their award-winning research studied the interplay of glutamate and dopamine systems in cognitive functions associated with the prefrontal cortex.
The research studies leading to this award were supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs' Schizophrenia Biological Research Center, the National Institute of Mental Health Conte Research Center on the Neurobiology of Schizophrenia, and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders. Krystal's research also was supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
The Kempf Fund Award recognizes the senior researcher, Krystal, for his scientific contributions to the field of schizophrenia research and his mentorship of an outstanding young scientist. This award also supports the young investigator, Mathalon, with a $20,000 research career development award. Submissions are judged on the excellence of the nominee's overall contribution to the body of research in schizophrenia.
The award will be presented at the Convocation of Fellows Program.
