Financial aid increased for Ph.D. students

Jon Butler, dean of the Graduate ,School of Arts and Sciences, has announced significant improvements in financial aid for graduate students in Ph.D. programs.

The standard nine-month stipend for both entering and continuing students in the humanities and social sciences will increase almost 6% to $18,000 in the 2005-2006 academic year. University Dissertation Fellowships in 2005-2006 will also increase to $18,000. Stipends for entering and continuing students in the sciences depend on the field of study, but also will increase, noted the dean.

Students entering in the fall of 2005 in the humanities and social sciences will also be eligible for three summer study fellowships. Continuing students who are eligible still will qualify for two such fellowships at $3,500 in any two of the first five summers.

"The new stipend and summer support levels continue a course of major enhancements to the financial aid packages for all doctoral students at Yale," said Butler.

In addition to these increases in the basic financial aid package, the dean also announced three further improvements:

* The Graduate School will provide a fellowship to cover the cost of the Continuing Registration Fee (CRF) for fifth- and sixth-year students in the humanities and social sciences. For students in the sciences, that fee continues to be covered by their departments.

* For students who teach outside of the standard financial aid package, the amount of the Teaching Fellowships (TF) will increase by 6.7% -- or $130 per TF unit; Part-Time Acting Instructor rates will increase correspondingly. "The new TF rate maintains last year's effort to decrease the differential between the standard departmental stipend and the teaching fellowships," said Butler. "The increases in the teaching fellowships coupled with the CRF fellowship will further help students no longer on the standard financial aid package."

* In response to proposals from the Graduate Student Assembly and the Graduate and Professional School Senate, the Athletics Department will no longer charge graduate students a fee to use the Payne Whitney Gymnasium during the summer. (All Yale students are entitled to use the gym for free during the academic year.)

Stipends are awarded for five years to all students in doctoral programs. All doctoral students are granted full tuition waivers; they are provided free health coverage for themselves and may purchase health coverage for their dependents at a 50% discount.

Butler thanked the Graduate Student Assembly, Provost Andrew Hamilton and President Richard C. Levin for support in making possible "such significant improvements in financial aid to graduate students amidst significant financial constraints."

The dean added, "These improvements benefit each student and advance Yale's standing among the world's preeminent graduate institutions."

Graduate students with questions about individual financial aid packages should contact Alice Oliver or Jennifer Brinley in the Office of Finance and Administration at the Graduate School at alice.oliver@yale.edu or jennifer.brinley@yale.edu, (203) 432-2739; or Pamela Schirmeister or Richard Sleight, associate deans, at pamela.schirmeister@yale.edu, (203) 432-7598, or richard.sleight@yale.edu, (203) 432-2744.
