Once again faculty, staff and students will come together to help non-profit organizations in New Haven by painting, planting, clearing trails and distributing books to children as part of the second annual Yale Community Service Day.
This year's event will be held on Saturday, April 23. All members of the campus community are invited to volunteer their services at one of 10 locations. Most of the projects require no special skills -- only a willingness to help.
The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a breakfast and kickoff in Beinecke Plaza. Teams -- which will be composed of volunteers from different parts of the University in order to allow Yale community members to meet others from across campus -- will be provided with transportation to the project sites, as well as needed materials and t-shirts. All projects will be completed by 1 p.m.
"Volunteering with a team from Yale will be a fun way to get to know colleagues and students," says John Pepper, vice president of finance and administration, who is sponsoring the event, "and a few hours of your time will make a real difference to the community, and has the potential of creating a lasting partnership with a number of local service organizations."
The Yale College Council (YCC) is hosting the event in partnership with Locals 34 and 35, Dwight Hall, the United Way of Greater New Haven, Yale's Office of New Haven & State Affairs and the McDougal Graduate Student Center.
This year's Yale Community Service Day project locations are:
The Connection Inc.: Refurbishing a facility that provides at-risk youth with a positive environment in which to learn and grow.
East Rock State Park: Cleaning up one of New Haven's natural treasures by clearing trails for summer use.
Eli Whitney Museum: Assembling boat kits used by children in the museum's spring and summer programs.
Fellowship Place: Helping in a spring clean-up and grounds renewal effort. The project will mostly involve gardening and planting.
LEAP (Leadership, Education and Athletic Partnership): Organizing and refurbishing a library of books donated to underprivileged families.
New Haven Boys & Girls Club: Painting and refurbishing a part of the club.
New Haven Reads: Helping the book bank distribute books to New Haven youth and families. There also may be opportunities to read with children.
New Haven YMCA Youth Center: Painting and refurbishing some rooms.
No Place Like Home: Helping with general yard clean-up and general upkeep for an adoption house that provides a home for children with severe medical difficulties.
To register for Yale Community Service Day, visit the website at http://yalestation.org/csd, or send e-mail to community@yalestation.org. Include your name, Yale affiliation, top three project choices, and information about any special circumstances (such as "no heavy lifting"). Volunteers will receive a confirmation and project assignment during the week of April 18.
Nirupam Sinha '05, former vice president of YCC, and Christopher Wells '06, chair of the Community Committee, are organizing the event. Other members of the coordinating committee are: Nina Glickson, President's Office; Reginald Solomon, Yale Office of New Haven & State Affairs; and Nancy Burke, United Way of Greater New Haven.
