Ernesto Zedillo, director of the Yale Center for Global Studies and former president of Mexico, is one of four world leaders who have been appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to serve as envoys for the U.N.'s September summit in New York.
At that summit, heads of state and government will review implementation of the Millennium Declaration, which was adopted five years ago.
In his report, titled "In larger freedom: towards development, security and human rights for all," Annan outlined steps that he believes need to be taken by the international community to meet the challenges of the 21st century. He called for world leaders to work toward halving poverty in the next 10 years; reducing the threat of war, terrorism and deadly weapons; and advancing human dignity in every land. He has also called for far-reaching reforms of the United Nations.
Annan appointed the four envoys to help him promote this agenda. In addition to Zedillo, they are Dermot Ahern, Ireland's minister for foreign affairs; Ali Alatas, Indonesia's former foreign minister; and Joaquin Chissano, Mozambique's former president.
The envoys will travel around the world to present this package of proposals to political leaders, civil society representatives, academics and the media.
In making the appointments, Annan noted that all of these individuals have vast political experience and profound knowledge of international relations, and are committed to the cause of the United Nations. He also thanked them for agreeing to invest their time, energy and political wisdom in assisting him in his efforts.
