Portraits of such noted Jewish personalities as Albert Einstein, Irving Berlin, Jerry Seinfeld and the Marx Brothers are among the paintings on view in a new exhibit at the Slifka Center featuring the artwork of Yale freshman Mark Schneider.
The exhibit includes 31 portraits that selectively chronicle 350 years of Jewish history in America. Schneider decided to paint the portraits following conversations with Yale's Jewish chaplain Rabbi Jim Ponet. His portraits were created using pastels, charcoals and pen and ink.
"In celebration of the 350th anniversary of Jews in America, I was inspired to explore the cultural heritage of my ancestry," says Schneider. "This exhibit is a sampling of the more colorful characters who embody the ideas, accomplishments and indomitable spirit of the Jewish people."
As a personal touch, Schneider has included a portrait of his grandfather, who was an artillery commander during World War II.
The freshman, of Davenport College, has done illustrations for the Yale Politic, the Yale Record, the Yale Herald and the Yale Free Press.
An opening reception for "Portraits of a People" will take place on Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St. The exhibition will remain on view through May 23.
