Thomas C. Duffy, professor (adjunct) and deputy dean of the School of Music, has been named by President Richard C. Levin as the acting dean of the school, effective July 1.
Duffy will serve in that role until a successor is found for Robert Blocker, who has been dean since 1995. Blocker is leaving Yale to become provost and vice president for academic affairs at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas.
Duffy, a member of the Yale faculty since 1982, is also the director of University Bands. He has been the director of undergraduate studies at the School of Music since 1996. Since 1999, he has chaired the Special Committee on the Arts. He has also served as master of the Summer Programs Colleges and is a resident fellow in Pierson College.
Duffy holds a B.S. in music education and an M.M.A. in musical composition from the University of Connecticut, and a D.M.A. in musical composition from Cornell University. His honors include a Yale School of Music Tercentennial Medal for composition, a first-prize composition award from New Music Delaware and a 1990 Ivy Award for outstanding contributions to understanding and cooperation between Yale and the City of New Haven. He has been designated by the Connecticut Music Educators Association as an Outstanding Music Educator. He served as president of Connecticut Composers Incorporated and of the New England College Band Association, and was elected to the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Levin will announce a search committee for the new music dean shortly.
