Judith B. Krauss has been appointed to a second five-year term as master of Silliman College, effective July 1, President Richard C. Levin has announced.
Krauss is a professor at the Yale School of Nursing (YSN), where she served as dean for 13 years, and is deputy director of the Program for the Study of Health Care Relationships.
In a letter to the Silliman community, Levin noted that Krauss' reappointment was recommended by a committee of the college's fellows, chaired by Alan J. Plattus, professor of architecture and urbanism at the School of Architecture.
Levin noted that the committee described Krauss as "a tone setter for Silliman, a professional who is scrupulously fair and totally frank in her interaction with those within the college. Students and fellows find her a good listener who is completely trustworthy, and students, especially, take great comfort in the strong emotional support she brings to all. 'Master K' is highly visible and involved in residential college life and she is praised for her consistent presence."
The president added that one Silliman student said: "There have been moments when Master K singlehandedly improved my quality of life during college, be it through formally helping me with a problem or being there for small talk and to make me feel like someone cared."
The committee also "expressed great enthusiasm for Associate Master Ronald Krauss, saying that he is a major asset to the college and helpful in creating a lively and engaging Silliman community," wrote Levin.
Krauss is a noted authority on the care of people with serious and persistent mental disorders. She and YSN colleague Sally Cohen founded the Program for the Study of Health Care Relationships, which studies patient-caregiver interactions.
Krauss joined the Yale faculty in 1971. As dean of YSN 1985-1998, she oversaw the establishment of the school's first doctoral program. She currently chairs the Council of Masters.
Levin thanked members of the review committee for their work. In addition to Plattus, they included Iona Black, lecturer in chemistry and resident fellow of Silliman; Kelly Brownell, professor and chair of psychology, director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders, and professor in the Institution for Social and Policy Studies; and William Segraves, associate dean of Yale College, dean's adviser on science education, and lecturer and research scientist in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology.
