Library exhibit celebrates the accomplishments of the Class of '55
In what is becoming a tradition, a returning Yale College class will celebrate its 50th reunion with an exhibition of works created by its members in Sterling Memorial Library's Memorabilia Room.
This year, the exhibit honors the Class of 1955, which is returning to campus on the weekend of June 2. The display, which will be on view through the end of July, will include books, photographs and musical scores, which will be augmented by class memorabilia such as playbills, programs and other printed ephemera from the holdings in the library's Manuscripts and Archives department.
Among the nearly 80 classmates represented in this year's exhibit are Pulitzer Prize- and National Book Award-winning author David McCullough; the self-described "archeologist with a camera," photographer David Plowden; and the resident composer and musical director of "Sesame Street," Sam Pottle. Work by renowned author and historian Alan Dundes, who recently passed away, will also be on exhibit.
This is the fourth such exhibit by a 50th reunion class; the trend began with an exhibit of artwork and books by members of the Class of 1952.
"It is a wonderful privilege for the library to host this display, selected by and representing so many Yale graduates from what was clearly a most distinguished year," says University Librarian Alice Prochaska. "Sterling Library holds special memories for many Yale alumni, and I am delighted that we can reciprocate by celebrating in turn the record of some of their achievements over the years."
Sterling Memorial Library is located at 120 High St. Through Aug. 30, library hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Friday; 8:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; and closed on Sunday.
