Pictured is a scene from last year's Yale Opera production of "Opera Scenes." The annual event gives both opera lovers and newcomers to the genre an opportunity to experience a variety of styles.

Scenes by Mozart, Verdi and Gilbert & Sullivan to be highlights of 'A Celebration of Opera'

Over the course of two evenings, audience members can travel through ancient and modern history via scenes from both rare and popular works during "A Celebration of Opera" at Yale.

Singers from the Yale Opera program, under the artistic direction of Doris Yarick Cross, will present performances Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29 and 30, at 8 p.m. in Sprague Memorial Hall, corner of College and Wall streets. Stage direction is by acclaimed guest director Vera Lúcia Calábria.

The opera scenes offer aficionados an opportunity to revisit their favorite works, and new listeners a taste of a wide range of styles. On Friday, the concert will feature scenes from Mozart's opera seria "Idomeneo," Janacek's late work "Kabanovà," Offenbach's popular operetta "La Grande-Duchesse do Gerolstein" and Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Golden Cockerel." On Saturday, the program will include scenes from Strauss's "Capriccio," Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado" and Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra."

Super-titles for all scenes not sung in English will be projected on a screen overhanging the stage.

In her 20-year career, stage director Calábria has worked with such prominent directors as Gian Carlo Menotti, Harold Prince, Roman Polanski and the late Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, among others. San Diego Magazine called her recent production of Mozart's "Idomeneo," featuring Placido Domingo as the King of Crete, "admirably clear and unobtrusive." She worked with Ponnelle on the U.S. premiere of Reimann's "Lear" for San Francisco Opera in 1981 and has since staged many operas for the company. She has also directed productions throughout the world.

Tickets for each evening's performance are $8 and $12; $5 for students. For more information or to order tickets, contact the School of Music's Concert and Press Office at (203) 432-4158, or visit www.yale.edu/music.
