Premiere of new music by Aaron Jay Kernis

Aaron Jay Kernis, adjunct professor of composition at the School of Music, will have his new work premiered by the Contrasts Quartet next month.

The quartet will perform "Trio in Red" on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church in Killingworth, 273 Route 81. The ensemble will also perform works by Beethoven, Haydn and Hindemith. A question-and-answer session with the composer and musicians will take place after the performance.

Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for seniors; $10 for students; $8 for children under 12. To order tickets, call (860) 663-5593.


Books Sandwiched In

Joanne B. Freeman, professor of history, will discuss her book, "Affairs of Honor: National Politics in the New Republic"at a "Books Sandwiched In" discussion on Thursday, Nov. 4. Sponsored by the New Haven Free Public Library, the talk will take place noon-1 p.m. in the community program room at the library, located at 133 Elm St. A book signing by the author will follow the discussion.


Jean in concert of Bach music

Martin Jean, adjunct professor of organ at the School of Music and adjunct professor at the Institute of Sacred Music (ISM), will be one of the performers in a concert of music by J.S. Bach at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 450 Whitney Ave.

Jean and the Bethesda Bach Ensemble will perform in a program titled "Music in the Reformation Tradition" at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31. Markus Rathey, adjunct assistant professor of music history at ISM, will give a pre-concert talk at 3:15 p.m.

There is no admission charge; a free will offering will be taken for an area-wide effort to support the work of Resurrection Lutheran Church, a parish in the Hill section of New Haven. For more information, call (203) 787-2346.


Galston to receive award from University of Illinois

The University of Illinois will bestow the 2004 College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Alumni Achievement Award on Arthur Galston, the Eaton Professor Emeritus of Botany in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and professor emeritus in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, at a reception and dinner in Urbana, Illinois, on Oct. 29.

Galston's research on plant photobiology, hormones, protoplasts and polyamines led to more than 320 papers in refereed journals, as well as more than 50 articles on public affairs, textbooks on plant physiology and edited anthologies of papers in bioethics.


Dance performance will benefit scholarship fund

A benefit performance for the Kathleen Sullivan Fund will be staged at the Shubert Theater, 247 College St., on Saturday, Oct. 30.

The fund was inspired by the late Kathleen Sullivan, a former clinical professor of law at the Law School, who worked in support of disadvantaged members of the greater New Haven community.

The program, titled "Night of Ballet Stars," will feature performances by principal dancers from the New York City Ballet. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $60, $75, and $150. Half-price "student rush" tickets will be available the day of the event at the box office for students with a Yale I.D., while tickets last.

All monies raised by ticket sales will be used to provide scholarships and grants to recipients through the fund, which works to advance educational and artistic opportunities for less advantaged individuals, and provide support for those who work on behalf of disadvantaged individuals.

Apkon named V.P. at YNHHS

Dr. Michael Apkon, associate professor of pediatrics, associate professor at the School of Management and lecturer in physiology, has been appointed vice president of performance management for the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS).

For the last two years, Apkon has been the vice chair of pediatrics at the School of Medicine and the medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit at the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. Apkon has also served as medical director of the YNHHS clinical program development fund.

Apkon completed his residency in pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He is also a graduate of the M.B.A. program at the School of Management.


Sheila Santacroce awarded two grants

Sheila Santacroce, assistant professor of nursing, has been awarded two grants for nursing research.

The first grant, from the National Cancer Institute, is for a study titled "Managing Uncertainty in Childhood Cancer Survivorship."

The study will examine the effectiveness of an intervention to address the fears of adolescent and young adult childhood cancer survivors and their parents about late relapse and adverse effects of treatment.

The second grant, "Monitoring Fidelity to Promote Research Integrity," will develop and test a general system for intervention fidelity monitoring. This study is funded by the Office of Research Integrity and the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Nursing Research.
