New program to offer joint M.B.A./Ph.D.
Yale's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and School of Management (SOM) have announced a new offering, one of the first programs of its kind: a joint M.B.A./Ph.D. degree.
This combined program recognizes the applicability of the Ph.D. degree beyond academia and the increasing relevance of sophisticated management analysis to positions held by many Ph.D. recipients.
"We're delighted to proceed with this innovative, challenging effort that places Yale at the forefront of efforts to link the Ph.D. to the broader world," says Graduate School Dean Jon Butler.
SOM Dean Joel Podolny adds: "One of Yale's greatest assets is the extent of its academic collaborations, which allow the University to offer innovative educational programs that cut across school boundaries. This program allows students to combine the depth of inquiry associated with a Ph.D. program with the breadth of knowledge and skill development associated with an M.B.A."
The program will combine the two years of study normally required to earn an M.B.A. with the six-year Ph.D. Students will complete requirements for both degrees in roughly seven years, rather than the eight or more that would be required if the degrees were pursued separately. Both degrees will be awarded simultaneously.
Like all graduate students, joint degree students will receive a full financial aid package from the Graduate School during the terms they are registered there.
For students in the humanities and social sciences, this includes tuition waivers for the four years that tuition is charged, five years of stipend, plus free health insurance for each term registered. Funding for students in the sciences will mirror standard departmental packages, which are at least as generous as support provided in the humanities and social sciences. Students will pay tuition and will not receive stipends during the three terms they are registered at SOM.
