Veterans Day concert will feature School of Music alumni
Five School of Music alumni, all members of America's premiere military bands based in Washington, D.C., will perform a Veterans Day concert on Friday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. in Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall, corner of College and Wall streets.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, will include works by Etler, Monteverdi, Ives and Lutoslawski, among others. Earlier in the day, at noon, the group will play the national anthem at Yale's Veterans Day ceremonies (see related story).
The performers will be:
Erika Schafer, who has been a trumpeter in the U.S. Navy Band since 2001 and a soloist with the band since 2005. She is active in other ensembles in the Washington, D.C., area.
Brian Stiles, a technical sergeant who has been a trumpeter with the U.S. Air Force Ceremonial Brass in Washington, D.C., since 2003. Stiles is currently pursuing his doctorate in brass pedagogy from Indiana University.
Rick Lee, French hornist, who is a member of the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" in Washington, D.C. While attending Yale, he won the principal French horn position in the Hofer Symphoniker in Hof, Germany. He has since had a full performance schedule both in the United States and internationally.
Sam Woodhead, who is the trombone soloist of "Pershing's Own." Woodhead joined in 2001 as a member of the ceremonial band and moved to his new position with the concert band in 2004. He is a D.M.A. candidate and orchestral assistant at the University of Maryland.
Mike Eberly, who is pursuing his doctoral studies at the University of Maryland, where he won his current position with "Pershing's Own." As a member of the Ceremonial Band since 2001, he has performed at the White House, Capitol Building, Supreme Court, Pentagon and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
