Security Procedures for Recess

The University Police Department issued the following statement on campus security procedures during the holiday recess.

The University's holiday recess begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22. Students must vacate their rooms by noon on Sunday, Dec. 18, and may reenter residences at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4. Because all dormitory rooms and many campus offices will be vacant during this period, students, faculty and staff should take special precautions to ensure the security of items of value.

During the recess period, electronic key cards issued to students for all residential college gates and the Old Campus will be deprogrammed. University Police and Security Progams personnel will increase patrols of University properties and residences.

Service or maintenance issues with locks should be directed to the lock shop. Issues with alarms, card access and keys should be directed to Security Programs at 5-5555.

During the recess, students are urged to:

* Make arrangements to store valuable items in college security rooms equipped with alarms. Valuables which should be placed in those rooms include stereos, computers, bicycles and any other valuable items.

* Check to ensure that all doors and windows are secured before leaving. Do not leave keys to your room or office behind. Take them home during shutdown.

* Check to make absolutely certain that you take everything you need from your rooms. Police officers will admit no one to the college and particularly to dorm rooms during the recess period.

University staff should determine what items of office equipment could be locked away. Articles such as small calculators, dictating machines, laptop computers, personal data assistants and personal belongings should be removed from desks and open areas. All desks, file cabinets, windows and doors should be locked.

Staff members working during the holidays who observe unsecured doors or windows should secure them, if possible. Remember: Open doors and windows invite theft.

Security is everyone's business. All open gates or open doors should be closed and locked. Anyone observing suspicious activity is urged to call the University Police Department at 111.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a safe holiday!
