Matching contribution program for hurricane relief exceeds expectations
A LETTER TO THE YALE COMMUNITY
With the images of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina still on our minds we approach another holiday season and winter recess with a mixture of anticipation and reflection.
This past September, I urged everyone to support those who had been affected by this disaster in whatever ways possible. Your outpourings of concern, collegial offers of assistance, and creative acts of fundraising for those who are still recovering from these disasters have been truly extraordinary. As the period for contributing to the University's Katrina relief program comes to a close, I want to thank each and every one of you for your support.
To date, 1,351 students, faculty and staff members have donated $186,915 through our contribution program. Many groups on campus conducted fundraising activities, which raised an additional $62,000. The Yale Katrina relief effort, which matched individual donations up to $1,000 plus monies contributed through group fundraising efforts, will deliver a total of $497,830.
As we have stated in an earlier message, the Officers, Deans and Fellows of the Corporation personally contributed the funds which were used in matching donations. I am pleased to announce that the total dollars contributed by these individuals exceeded the amount necessary to match your donations. In the spirit of generosity that was initiated by you, we will donate the entire amount contributed by the officers, deans and fellows of the Corporation to the relief efforts. This brings the grand total of all of Yale's donations to approximately $ 748,915.
Many individuals, families and communities will be recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina for years to come. I am confident, however, that our efforts will offer measures of comfort and hope for those who have lost so much. Once again, I thank you for your acts of volunteerism and remarkable generosity in response to this national disaster.
