New Orbis features include ability for 'wildcard' search
The Yale University Library has introduced several changes to its Orbis online catalogue, resulting from an upgrade to a new version of the system software.
Orbis users will notice the following new features:
* When signing on to their library account, users will now be directed to CAS Authentication where a Yale NetID and password will be required to log in, eliminating the need for social security numbers. (There is no need to log in to Orbis to search the catalogue.)
* A new "renew all" feature will enable users to do a blanket renewal of all library items they have checked out, without having to specifically select them as before. Wording in red will indicate if an item cannot be renewed, such as a recalled book.
* If an item is "in transit" from one library to another, this will now be displayed under the "status" field in the item display. If a user is searching for a book from the Sterling Library that has been returned to the Medical Library, for instance, Orbis will indicate that the book is on its way back to Sterling and will be back on the shelf soon.
* The new system will now support the use of "wildcards" for left and internal truncation in keyword searching. This will let users search for variant spellings of a term, such as British and American variants, using "%" and "?" symbols. For example, the wildcard "%" matches any one character in the location where it is placed, such as "civili%ation," where the search would return records that contain the spellings "civilization" or "civilisation."
* Non-Roman scripts for Japanese, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Persian, Hebrew and Yiddish will now display in Orbis, as a result of the Orbis catalog now being Unicode compliant.
Help files have been added to the library website to reflect these changes and to provide more details about these new features. Users are invited to send questions or comments about Orbis or other library services to smlref@yale.edu.
