Yale nurse devoted to HIV/AIDS treatment and education in China is honored at conference there
A conference co-sponsored by the Yale- China Association this fall was both an opportunity for Chinese healthcare workers to consider the treatment of mental illness there and a chance to pay tribute to the work being done in that nation by a professor from Yale's School of Nursing (YSN).
Ann Williams, the Helen Porter Jayne & Martha Prosser Jayne Professor of Nursing and a long-time trustee of the Yale-China Association, was honored at Central South University in Changsha, Hunan province, for her work in the region with the Yale-China Association and Chinese health care workers on HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C and other blood-borne pathogens.
Williams was installed as a visiting professor at the university at a ceremony held in conjunction with a conference titled "Mental Illness in China: Status, Needs, and Strategies," held Oct. 19-20 in Changsha.
The conference, which the Yale-China Association co-sponsored with Xiangya School of Medicine, brought together prominent researchers, policymakers, public health professionals and clinicians from the United States and China to assess the status of mental health in China in the context of the overall health care system and corresponding policy, legal and social environment. The conference provided a platform for participants to promote awareness among policymakers of the severity of China's mental health problems, and share successful strategies and lessons learned. In addition, the cross-disciplinary environment fostered collaboration and encouraged multidisciplinary research methods in the field.
Papers presented at the conference will be published in the 2005 edition of the annual Yale-China Health Journal. Past editions of the journal include topics such as HIV/AIDS in China and the state of the health system in China and are available free of charge on the Yale-China website: www.yalechina.org/publications.html.
Details on the mental health conference, including conference presentations and the conference agenda, can be found in both English and Chinese on the Yale-China website at www.yalechina.org/programs/mental_conf.html.
