Craig M. Wright

Craig M. Wright designated the Henry L.
and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music

Craig M. Wright, the newly named Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music, is the author of numerous scholarly books and articles on composers ranging from Leoninus in the 12th century to Bach in the 18th century.

Wright has traveled to Western Europe to conduct in-depth studies of the musical history of the region's great cathedrals -- as presented in his early books "Music at the Court of Burgundy, 1364-1419: A Documentary History" and "Music and Ceremony at Notre Dame of Paris, 500-1550." He took a more interdisciplinary approach in his later works, "The Maze and the Warrior: Symbols in Architecture, Theology and Music" and "Music in Western Civilization" (co-authored by Bryan Simms). His "Listening to Music" -- a book and accompanying CD based on Wright's popular Yale undergraduate course of the same name -- is now going into its fifth edition and will soon be published in Chinese by the Three Union Press in Beijing.

After receiving a Bachelor of Music degree in 1966 from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied piano and music history, Wright went on to major in musicology at Harvard University, earning master's and doctoral degrees in 1969 and 1972 respectively. He taught for a year at the University of Kentucky before joining the Yale faculty in 1973. He chaired Yale's Department of Music 1986-1992.

In addition to the introductory Yale College course "Listening to Music," which attracts large numbers of students annually, Wright teaches more specialized courses ranging from ancient Greek music theory to the music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, to that of Bach and Mozart.

Wright was awarded the International Musicological Society's Edward J. Dent Medal and the American Musicological Society's Alfred Einstein Prize and Otto Kinkeldey Award -- making him one of the few individuals to hold all three honors. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1982 for his research at Notre Dame, and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by the University of Chicago in 2004.

Outside of Yale, Wright has served as a coach of boys and girls in the New Haven Youth Soccer Program, and was vice president of the board of the Neighborhood Music School.
