Yale delegates meet with world leaders at Davos

President Richard C. Levin and Vice President Linda Lorimer, Ernesto Zedillo and several senior faculty represented Yale at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum, held Jan. 24-29 in Davos, Switzerland.

The World Economic Forum gathers leaders in business, education, the arts, government, and international and non-governmental organizations to seek creative solutions to a variety of world challenges and issues of common interest.

Other members of the Yale delegation were Daniel Esty, director of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, the Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy, and project director of a World Economic Forum study on the environment (see story in the Jan. 27 Yale Bulletin & Calendar), and Robert Shiller, the Stanley B. Resor Professor of Economics.

Levin moderated the panel "Education in the Global Context." He also participated in a workshop that weighed the merits of new approaches to innovation in the global market.

Lorimer took part in a session titled "The Economics of Good Parenting" and in a workshop on "the language of global youth," which considered ways in which products can be successfully marketed to the world's young people.

Zedillo, director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization and former president of Mexico, chaired a session about the changing role of the United Nations, with introductory remarks by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Esty, who developed the Environmental Sustainability Index rating the environmental friendliness of nations, moderated a panel titled "Breakthrough Ideas for 2006: China as a Green Lab." Panelists discussed ways China might avoid the environmental damage emerging from its rapidly increasing economy. Esty also took part in a discussion weighing the merits of Millennium Development Goals.

Shiller, author of "Irrational Exuberance," was on a panel exploring the long- and short-term effects on the global economy when the current property bubble bursts.

Yale alumnus Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International, who has recently been elected to the Yale Corporation, chaired a session titled "U.S. Freedom and Democracy Agenda." Hamid Karzai, president of Afghansitan, and Senator John Kerry were among the participants in this workshop on forging democracies in the Middle East and responding to such critical issues as counterterrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
