The Forum of Young Global Leaders, an affiliate of the World Economic Forum, has named Michael Auslin, assistant professor of history and director of the Yale Project on Japan-U.S. Relations, as a Young Global Leader for 2006.
Auslin is one of 41 North Americans chosen to become Young Global Leaders this year and will join an international community now including 410 leaders from all regions and stakeholder groups.
Auslin, who specializes in Japanese international history and U.S.-East Asian relations, is also a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a fellow of the U.S.-Japan Leadership Program. A frequent commentator in the American and Japanese press, he is the author of "Negotiating with Imperialism: The Unequal Treaties and the Culture of Japanese Diplomacy" and is working on a second book, titled "Pacific Cosmopolitans: The Cultural Encounter Between Japan and the United States." He is a resident fellow of Berkeley College.
Established in 2004, the Forum of Young Global Leaders brings together global leaders age 40 or younger to work together in the 2020 Initiative, a comprehensive endeavor to understand current and future trends, risks and opportunities both at global and regional levels; formulate a positive vision for the world in 2020; and put forward concrete strategies to translate their vision into action.
Each year a new class of around 200 Young Global Leaders is selected for a five-year membership, with the goal of forming a community of 1,111 by 2009. The 2006 class was chosen from among 3,500 candidates and includes the presidents of El Salvador and Georgia, the prime minister of Estonia, the mayors of San Francisco and Yokohama, U.S. Senator John Sununu, author Samantha Power, and Larry Page and Sergey Brin, co-founders of Google.
The Young Global Leaders will meet as a community at their Annual Summit in Vancouver, Canada, June 9-12, 2006. For information, visit www.younggloballeaders.org.
