In the Yale Bulletin & Calendar article "Yale Professor Wins Grammy" in the Feb. 17 issue, we noted that John Szwed may have been the first Yale affiliate to win a Grammy Award when he won the honor for "Best Album Notes" this month.
It recently came to our attention that Yale can safely boast two Grammy winners: In 1996, Erick Friedman, a renowned violinist and Yale music professor, won a Grammy for "Best Historical Album" for his participation in "The Heifetz Collection." Friedman taught at Yale for more than two decades before his death in 2004.
Szwed, the John M. Musser Professor of Anthropology and African American Studies, won the Grammy Award for his book "Doctor Jazz," which accompanies the eight-CD set "Jelly Roll Morton. The Complete Library of Congress Recordings."
