Helen Resor

Yale boasts bronze-winning Olympian

Yale sophomore Helen Resor is bringing home a medal from the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, as a member of the bronze-winning U.S. women's ice hockey team.

Resor, who became the first Yale women's hockey player ever to play in the Olympics when she was tapped for the U.S. team on Dec. 27, was actually one of two Yale-affiliated players in that sport competing in Torino. In January, Denise Soesilo, a member of the German Olympic women's hockey team, committed to attend Yale next year, making her Yale's second Winter Olympian.

Resor's and Soesilo's teams squared off on Feb. 12 during the preliminary rounds, with Germany losing to the United States in a 5-0 shut-out.

The U.S. women's hockey team -- which brought home gold and silver medals in the last two Winter Olympics -- lost its bid for the top two slots when it fell 3-2 in an overtime shootout loss to Sweden on Feb. 17. The U.S. skaters beat Finland 5-0 for the bronze on Feb. 20, winning Resor her first Olympic medal.

Resor, who helped lead the Bulldogs to a school-record 16 wins and their first-ever ECACHL playoff victory in 2004, missed this year's season at Yale, as she was playing for the U.S. Women's National Team on its "Skate to 2006" tour. She was one of 20 players from that team chosen to represent the United States at the Olympics.

Soesilo, who played her first game with the German National Team at the age of 14, competed in both the 2004 and 2005 IIHF Women's World Championships. Also an accomplished violinist, she says she chose to come to Yale "for its diverse student body, the great music scene and beautiful campus. And, of course, the hockey team's amazing potential and coaching. Yale was the one place where I could actually see myself spending four years of my life."

Just prior to the Winter Olympics, the Yale Athletics Department announced a new endowment for Yale women's ice hockey, which marks its 30th anniversary this year. (See related story.)
