The public will be able to wander into parts of the Sterling Memorial Library that are otherwise inaccessible to the public -- and see the "treasures" contained in these spaces -- during three tours being offered as part of the library's 75th anniversary celebration.
The "Treasures of the Yale Library" tours last one hour. Registration is required for each tour since places are limited. To register, call (203) 432-8061 or send e-mail to anniversary75th@yale.edu.
The three tours are:
Thursday, March 23, 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. -- "Treasures of the Benjamin Franklin Collection." This tour also marks the 300th anniversary of Franklin's birth. The collection of books, rare books, pamphlets, paintings, prints, busts and manuscripts is the most extensive collection of materials by and about Benjamin Franklin and his times to be found in a single place anywhere in the world. The collection also houses the editorial offices of "The Papers of Benjamin Franklin," a comprehensive edition of Franklin's correspondence and writings, published in 37 volumes to date.
Wednesday, March 29, 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. -- "The Journey of a Book." Participants in this tour will follow the journey each Yale library book goes through from the point it is selected and acquired by the library to the intricate cataloging process and to the point that it finally reaches the shelf. Participants will have the opportunity to see the various processes each book goes through. The tour will begin in the Acquisitions Department, where over 120,000 books, periodicals and microforms are received and processed annually. Tour participants will also meet the 40 staff members who work with nearly 3,000 publishers, vendors and booksellers to acquire materials published in the United States, the United Kingdom and western Europe. Then they will progress into the cataloging department, where each book is classified and given a description. They will learn how call numbers are designated so that books from all over the world are given their proper place in Yale's collections, and will visit the Preservation Department, where they will see how damaged and special collection items are conserved. The tour will also visit the Reformatting, Commercial Binding, Collection Care and Conservation units.
Wednesday, April 26, noon and 3 p.m. -- "Treasures of Sterling's Architecture." In this tour, participants will have the opportunity to see the Gothic architecture and stone cravings of the library.
These tours are the final of a series offered in conjunction with the library's anniversary celebration. Previous tours showcased the Babylonian Collection, the stained glass in the Gothic nave of Sterling Library, and an array of items from the Visual Arts and Slavic Collections, among other library highlights.
The Yale Library houses more than 11 million volumes, as well as information in all media, from ancient papyri to electronic databases. An international research library, it is engaged in numerous projects to expand its collections. The library is housed in 22 buildings, including the Sterling and Beinecke libraries, and employs a staff of nearly 600 people. For additional information about the library, its hours or its special collections, visit its website at www.library.yale.edu.
