There will be a Yale Forest Forum on the topic "Markets and Payments for Forest Ecosystem Services" on Thursday, March 23, 4-6 p.m. in Bowers Auditorium, Sage Hall, 205 Prospect St.
The forum, which is free and open to the public, will focus on forest ecosystem services, which include both natural life-supporting assets (such as clean water, climate mitigation, soil stability, wildlife habitat and clean air) and amenities (such as aesthetics, recreational opportunities and spiritual connection to nature.) These services have historically been free of charge, considered to be public goods.
With increasing demands on land for multiple uses and development, many experts have acknowledged that more land will remain as forests, and in healthy condition, if forest landowners are compensated for the whole suite of services they provide, not just products that can be sold at markets. The Yale forum will look at how the market mechanisms for forest ecosystem services are working, with an emphasis on how to move towards a self-sustaining market in the United States.
