Free haircuts will be offered to those who are both longhaired and charitable during the second annual Locks of Love Hair Drive at Yale on Monday, March 27.
From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium, 70 Tower Pkwy., Rimagé Salon & Spa and Nicole Pierre Salon will offer free haircuts to participants who donate six or more inches of hair. Participants without enough hair to donate may receive a haircut in exchange for a $25 donation to Locks of Love. There are 120 appointments available, and walk-ins are welcome.
Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces mainly to children with alopecia areata, which causes hair follicles to shut off and has no known cause or cure. The drive will also benefit financially disadvantaged children who have lost their hair due to severe burns, cancer treatment and other medical conditions.
Last year's Locks of Love Drive at Yale raised over $1,000 and collected over 90 ponytails.
This year's drive is organized by Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH) students Ashlea Barrett, Eva Chang, Jessica Clague, Lisa Bono Corredor, Nicki Lapidus, Diane Martinez, Sarah Merten, Anne Reiner, Diana Strong, Sharon Tsui and Pui Ling Yau. The event is sponsored by the EPH Student Organization, the Yale Graduate and Professional Student Senate, Yale Reprographic and Imaging Services, the Medical Student Council, the Yale Health Professional School's Committee Overseeing Volunteer Services, Branford Academy, Rimagé Salon and Spa, Nicole Pierre Salon and North Haven Academy: Paul Mitchell Partner School.
